The total eclipse in 1999. As well as the spectacle itself,to hear a gasp of astonishment from several thousand people was something I had never heard before.

Very much the opposite of what this section is all about but I saw the Vulcan crash at RAF Syerston during a Battle of Britain airshow on 20th September 1958. That was doing a rolling climb after a low flight over the runway when it had a catastrophic failure of the wing.

spitfire617 , yes indeed and as a very small kid in south London I heard the Spitfire snarl as the RAF set about german bombers
