I took the plunge and wore my new rubber mac (see my previous thread about buying it a couple of weeks ago) in full view of Joe Public earlier today ... I must say it was a most positive experience.
Despite the fact that it wasn't even raining (it was merely cloudy and chilly), I decided to give it a go and see how everything went. Can you imagine how excited I was while I did up every button to the neck before leaving the house? That beautiful rubber aroma is positively intoxicating.
I was really surprised to see that nobody took any notice of me or my mac while I completed a couple of jobs at a local shoping centre: banking followed by a short excursion inside a supermarket before leaving. I think it was a combination of factors: the dark colour of my mac, the fact most observers would have mistaken it for leather and the threatening weather.
There's not enough words to describe how much I love wearing my rubber mac; the shine, the smell, the warmth and comfort of everything. The pockets are also perfectly positioned to hide my hands from the chill too. ... you beauty!!
I can't wait to add a belt and sou' wester which someone is going to make for me ... I'm not sure if I'll wear the sou'wester indoors though.
I rember reading how hard it is working up enough confidence to go outside in rainwear: give it a try and see how it goes. Once your confidence rises, it also provides further camouflage when everyone sees how comfortable and relaxed you are.

Re: wearing my new rubber mac ...
as you say nobody takes any notice if you aren't wearing anything outrageous. As you also say it could be easily confused for leather anyway. Without wishing to be rude to you mason people probably have better things to do than look in great detail at what you are wearing. Its only the fact that some of us can be a little selfconscious that makes us think we are the centre of attention when it is just not the case. Can't help thinking that if you added the souwester indoors on a dry day then that would be the look at me touch. Just keep enjoying the mac.

Well I can imagine how good it was to wear your rubber mac Mason
Although I have never had the privilege to wear one I am told it is something else, especially that exotic aroma
But as regards going out in my macs if it is raining or not...I don"t care...if I feel like wearing my mac I wear it
What people think it is up to them
This morning I had reason to go out...it was light rain...ideal weather for wearing my lightweight nylon mac..on coming out of a Health Centre I had to visit the rain had stopped but I thought why carry my mac when I can wear it
Not aware of anyone even noticing what I was wearing
I wonder why so many are selfconscious of wearing their macs...it should be up to the individual what they wear
For the cooler days of Winter...irrespective if it is wet or dry I wear a Trenchcoat and have been paid compliments...saying how smart I look
Just a suggestion but if anyone wants to get over being self conscious wearing a mac in public try to find a fellow mac enthusiast who would be willing to walk with you
I always think people are rushing here...rushing there,,,the last thing on their minds is if they see a guy in a mac
A couple of Summer like days expected(Tuesday & Wednesday) then back to normal on Thursday...Rain ..Rain and more Rain
So anyone a bit apprehensive of wearing their mac outside make your mind up...if it is raining on Thursday or whatever day it rains in your area....put your mac on and go
I gurantee you will wonder why the apprehension for so long and at every opportunity after that you will be wearing your mac

MMMM....yes, you are correct, there is just no substitute for that wonderful rubber aroma!
Sadly it's just too damned hot here to wear rubber right now. Looking forward to those crisp damp fall days in a few short months.

For all the "apprehensive" mac wearers out there...wondering if anyone will notice or even comment on them wearing a mac in public
Stephie"s contribution..."Wearing the bright yellow ladies mac in public" must convince one and all people just don"t give a damn what others are wearing
Thursdays forecast here in the South East...Heavy Rain...Mac wearing weather...so go for it....put on your mac...go !
I gurantee you will get people secretly envious of you...them getting drenched...you snug and dry and getting a thrill at the same time
Peter

That's one of those little things that adds to the pleasure for me, to be out on one of those days where an unexpected thunderstorm pops up and I'm prepared for it (as I've always got at least one raincoat & a pair of wellies in my car at any given time) while everyone else is running for cover or struggling to stay dry under a useless little ladies' foldup umbrella. I suppose it's a smug sense of satisfaction as the people who might make fun of my for my attire aren't laughing now, but instead wishing they had the same good sense as me.pacamac2 wrote: I gurantee you will get people secretly envious of you...them getting drenched...you snug and dry and getting a thrill at the same time

Re: wearing my new rubber mac ...
Here in South East England for Thursday through to Sunday and possibly beyond rain...rain and more rain but how many will be seen in flimsy items of clothing...some not even waterproof....fighting against the odds with an umbrella in the expected high winds
Now my planned rainwear will be my old faithful Trenchcoat kindly given to me by an appreciative lady who I done some gardening for
It was her husband"s...he sadly died...she offered it to me and it was made to measure
So as I amble along all dry I will be looking at (with a smug feeling)the anti mac brigade who seem to prefer getting drenched
Funny old world we live in isn"t it?
