Jay stood in front of the mirror on the back of his bedroom door. His heart was pounding and he felt both ashamed and turned on by the thought of what he hoped to do. He thought his crisp white shirt and black PVC jeans looked sophisticated and sexy at the same time. He had applied a hint of makeup giving him a New Romantics vibe from the 80’s. He was always a good straight boy, but for most of his life he knew he was different.
All he needed to do now was to slip quietly downstairs and out, with a quick goodbye to his parents as they sat with their backs to him watching Coronation Street, offering them no chance to see him or resist his leaving. Ever since Todd told him about the new club opening in town he had become obsessed. The thought of other men, beautiful men, but most importantly Todd, had driven him to this point. The secret package from eBay with the super soft and sexy jeans which he had to get to before his mother got suspicious, to his secret stash of makeup that he kept under his bed. Tonight was the night Jay did what he wanted, what he had always wanted, not what his parents wanted.
Operation creep was not going well as his new Todd catcher trousers creaked with every step down the stairs. There was just the short distance from the bottom to the front door and freedom. His hand was on the latch.
“Going out somewhere?”, his heart sank as he heard his mother’s voice.
“Yes, a new club in town, I’m meeting some friends”, he replied in as strong a voice as he could muster in the face of his overbearing parent. The club bit was true, but the friends bit was not. He was going alone and mildly terrified. He knew nobody like him, but had suspected Todd to be a kindred spirit. He had straight friends, especially girls who he got on well with, but this was something he had to do alone.
“Well you can’t go out like that, you’ll catch your death, and it looks like rain”, there was an uncharacteristic softness in his mother’s voice which was unexpected.
“Here, take this”, she opened the cupboard under the stairs and pulled out an old black PVC trench coat that had hung there all his life.
“Mum, no, I’m 25, I can’t wear that!”, Jay protested.
The softness vanished, “take it or you are not going out young man”, and she proceeded to dress her son in her old raincoat, which annoyingly fitted well. She buttoned it up, girls fitting of course, and pulled the belt tight as she fastened it.
“Jesus mother, I can’t be seen like this”, he replied, but by now he was being bundled out of the front door into the dark night.
Jay shuffled down the driveway towards the waiting Uber like a chastised schoolboy.
Arif had a world-worn Middle Eastern look but his voice was soft and kind. Jay wondered if his driver shared his desire for men, “that is an interesting look you have there are you going to meet a special friend”, he asked.
“No I am trying the new club on Queen Street, my mother made me wear this hideous thing”, Jay replied.
“Mothers eh, we love them but they can ruin our lives”, Arif replied with a chuckle in his voice, “what you need is my brothers special sparkle”, and he rummaged around in the glovebox before producing a bottle and cloth, “it is for latex but he tells me it works well on other shiny fabrics”.
Jay wondered what kind of relationship this man had with his brother, but it sounded free and open, not like the oppressive overbearing parents he had, then he thought what life might have been like if he had a brother.
The bottle label was not in English, “what’s it for?”.
“Put a little on the cloth and wipe it on the raincoat”, Arif replied with a big laugh.
The transformation from old dull crumpled raincoat to super shiny stylish trench coat was amazing. Not only did the substance shine, but it also smoothed as it went. Jay enthusiastically treated the whole garment until every inch of it sparkled.
Magically the car pulled up outside the club just as Jay slipped the newly rejuvenated trench coat back on, although in truth there was no magic, Arif has taken the long route to allow Jay time to complete his task.
The young man stepped out of the car and thanked Arif as he handed back the bottle and cloth. He strode nervously towards the line of figures silhouetted against the large pink neon sign.
The first people he could make out were a group of girls, he stopped. Had he got this wrong? Was this a normal straight club, was he dressed fabulously only to be mocked by hetros? Then one girl slid her hand over the leather skirted bottom of the other and gave her a deep passionate kiss. The relief was palpable and Jay joined the line behind the women.
He had the coat open, collar up, and hands in the pockets, “hello pretty boy you are going to be a hit tonight”, said a girl with electric blue hair, “are you hoping to meet the man of your dreams or just get a good fucking?”
Jay was shocked at the way she spoke. Sex was of course something he had considered, but not here, not tonight, he assumed it would be going on few dates then working up to things, Todd did not seem to be the sort to jump in the sack straight away, but then Jay didn’t really know anything about Todd.
Two men joined the line behind Jay. He smiled at them nervously but they seemed preoccupied with each other and suddenly Jay felt very alone. Suddenly he felt an arm slip around his arm, he turned, impossibly hoping it was Todd, but electric blue girl had grabbed his arm, “don’t worry sugar tits, we’ll look after you”, and both she and her friend smiled.
Jay felt conflicted, this is why he got on so well with girls, he understood them. They could be bitches, but they also recognised a girl in need of a friend.
The line moved slowly, but Jay didn’t really notice as he chatted to Suzi and Karen as if they had known each other for years. Eventually they were at the head of the queue. Normally this is the point that Jay expected confrontation as a man trying to get in alone, but he suspected that even without the girls he would have been welcomed.
Inside was less frantic than he had expected, more like a lively bar than a club. Yes there was music and a DJ but it seemed less intrusive than he was used to and he could even hear people talking without having to strain too much.
There was a sea of muscular bodies and plenty of leather and studded straps on display, as he had probably expected, but also lots of people dressed normally; in fact he felt for once like one of the more extrovert characters, and was loving it.
He ordered a drink at the bar along the lines of “I’ll have whatever that is”, pointing to a tall, thin glass, filled with layers of coloured drink, topped off with a plastic skull cocktail stick. The burly owner of the glass smiled, “I hope you can handle it darling, we don’t want to be wheeling you out on a stretcher this early in the night!”
“Ignore him”, said the barman, “he likes to act hard but is a soft pussy really”. The man pouted at the barman, “love you too darling”.
Jay was not prepared for the humour of the place. Everybody was poking fun at everyone else and it seemed like everyone loved it. He assumed it was a kind of antidote to the sort of jibes gay people got from heteros in the outside world. Even if he didn’t meet Todd tonight, Jay thought this was a brilliant place and was loving it. The girls had slipped away at some point, not that he hadn’t noticed, but more that they realised he didn’t need them anymore.
“Hello stranger, I haven’t seen you on the scene before”, Jay spun around, the voice sounded just like Todd, his heart pounded, but it was not him. The man had was dressed conservatively, handsome, with a lovely smile, “can I buy you a drink?”, he asked.
Jay was taken aback. Nobody had ever asked if they could buy HIM a drink, he was always the one doing the asking of some poor girl that he felt compelled to chat up, even though in his heart of hearts he knew no amount of low cut dress was getting him interested.
“Oh, um, sure, um, thanks”, he said suddenly wondering what the price of such an act was going to be.
“I’m Bill, love the coat by the way”.
“Uh, thanks, people seem to like it here, just threw it on as an afterthought really”, not really a lie!
The two men sat chatting until eventually Bill had to say something, “you seem distracted, am I boring you?”
“Oh gosh no!”, replied Jay, “I just thought I might see someone I know”.
Bill placed a hand on Jay’s PVC covered arm, “I get it, I’m happy to just chat until your special friend comes along”.
Jay felt embarrassed, “sorry. Let me buy you a drink and I promise not to get distracted”.
In truth Jay expected to meet someone a bit more exciting. Bill was nice but safe and to be honest would pass for straight if you didn’t know otherwise.
The club was getting hot and Jay needed to slip his mother’s trench coat off. The club was staffed by waitresses and waiters taking orders and delivering drinks in a very American style. Both sexes wore tight navy blue PVC hot pants and blue tee-shirts with the club logo in bright pink emblazoned across the front. A young waitress walked by, “may I take that for you, we have a coat check, I can drop it there for you”, she ran a hand over the PVC raincoat.
“Thank you”, Jay said as he handed the carefully folded coat over.
“Love the leather jeans darling, they look fabulous on you”, Bill admired the young man’s choice of trousers.
Jay stroked his thigh, “they’re new but not real leather, I got them specially for tonight, for…”
“Oops, you nearly slipped up there darling, for who? Who did you wear them for? Not me, I know that. Come on I’m intrigued”.
Suddenly the music stopped and the lights went down even lower than they already were. Then a spotlight appeared next to where the DJ was set up. A small raised stage that Jay had not seen before was empty except for the bright white light.
“Ladies, gentlemen, kings and queens, please welcome to our small, but perfectly formed and wonderfully pert stage…”, after a suitably timed pause, “EMPRESS ZARA”.
The club went wild, “Who the fuck is…”, Jay asked Bill, but he wasn’t hearted over the cheering and whooping.
Gold shimmering curtains behind the small stage rustled then opened to reveal a tall figure in silhouette. She was wearing high heels, a long dress and top with big shoulder pads, all topped off with a tall hair tied up.
She stepped forward and the impossible happened; the crowd went even wilder.
Jay looked on in wonder. The shimmering dark blue dress, jewels on her shoes, the bright red hair and shiny black PVC trench coat. His coat. His mother’s coat. The thieving bastard had stolen his PVC raincoat and annoyingly looked utterly fabulous in it.
She raised the microphone and started to sing.
“Bloody hell this is cheesy”, Jay said to nobody in particular, “sodding Dancing Queen, could it get more cliche?”
Nobody heard, everyone was clapping and cheering, only Jay was subdued.
Something in her pronunciation of the world “young” made Jay look up.
“Todd? Oh for fuck sake, is that you Todd?”
“The friend you were hoping to see?”, Bill had noticed Jay was not joining in and was concerned.
“Ex-friend it appears, do you see?”, Jay said as he pointed toward the performer.
“Is that your lovely mac? What a cheeky cow!”, Bill smiled, “but a hell of a drag act isn’t it?”
Jay knew he couldn’t go home without his mother’s trench coat, besides it was his now and he had to get it back.
“Maybe one of the staff gave him the coat”, Jay said to Bill in an attempt to exonerate Todd, “he thinks it’s a stage prop”.
“Well we can find out”, Bill was pushing his way through the screaming fans towards the front. Big burly men were knocked aside as he thrust forward. “Coming through”.
“Wait”, said Jay following behind.
The pair stood at the front, Todd recognised Jay and blew him a kiss between breaths, and gave a wink.
Jay’s heart melted, “you know that shiny PVC does look good on him, um her, oh whatever, sexy as hell”.
The song ended and the crowd went wild again. Todd bowed and kissed his way backwards off stage until the shimmering curtains closed.
Bill darted forward to follow with Jay in pursuit, the Empress was already heading through a side door to the street.
“Excuse me”, Bill shouted after Todd. The drag queen was standing with her back to he pair in pursuit, when she turned around Jay saw that she had met with a man in the alleyway outside the club holing a cigarette.
The man was tall and thin, wearing a long red plastic raincoat, through which could be seen dark shorts and vest. The mac flapped open a little as he moved to briefly reveal the shiny latex outfit underneath. He wore some makeup and Jay suspected he was also a drag Queen not quite fully made up for the stage.
“That is my friend’s trench coat, can he have it back now please”, Bill’s voice was polite but strong.
“Why Jaybird, my my, come to see what life is like down with the poofs?”
Todd’s tone had a condescending sneer to it, “come to defend the honour of another hapless lad have we William?”
Jay was rapidly losing his crush on Todd, “don’t call me that and I am perfectly capable of looking after my own interests”, he snapped.
“But Jaybird darling, we all know you did time at His Majesty’s pleasure, what was it, kiddie fiddling, or indecent exposure? I’d say that is fairly indecent in those awful cheap plastic trousers you have there, a crime worthy of more time inside I think!”
The man in the see-through plastic raincoat tried to intervene, “listen darlings, why don’t we all go back inside and talk this through, I’ll buy everyone a drink?”
Todd knew full well that Jay was seen coming out of the prison visitor entrance after seeing his uncle, but it appears he haas decided to twist events to bully Jay.
The men fell silent at the clip-clop sound of heels at the end of the alleyway. Two girls giggled at the men as they went by. In that moment Jay wished life was simpler, wished that he felt something for the curvy girl in her far-too-short black leather mini skirt, or her slimmer friend creaking in super shiny silver PVC leggings, but alas, the thought of stiff dick was what got his motor started. Suddenly aware that he had not yet had the opportunity to see, let alone touch, someone else’s manhood, and judging by current proceedings, tonight was probably not going to be that night.
Bill stepped forward and grabbed the sleeve of Jay’s trench coat, the feel of the soft shiny material gave him an instant thrill, “come on hand it over”, he said.
Empress Zara pulled back, “I don’t know where you get that idea, but this is mine and it is staying right where it is”, she stumbled back against her friend who caught her in his arms.
“Thank you darling you are such a love”, and the two embraced in a way that Jay realised meant they were more than just fellow performers, but he was rapidly cooling to Todd anyway as he seemed to be a right bitch and thief.
The side door swung open, “Five minutes Vicky Voluptuous”, announced the girl.
“Oh shit, I’d better get sorted, be a love and help me”, the man in the plastic mac said to Todd.
The two scooted quickly past Bill and Jay, Todd purposefully slamming the door behind them, stopping the men from reentering the club.
Bill and Jay went back to the front of the club and were greeted equally enthusiastically by the bouncers as Jay had been on arrival. How refreshing to be welcomed, “have you lost that gorgeous mac?”, said the taller of the security detail, “I hope not it looked fabulous”. Jay was surprised that he was recognised but pleased; these are my kind of lovely people he thought.
Back inside a tall curvy girl dressed in a tight fitting shiny red latex catsuit was on the stage thanking the previous performer.
“Now beautiful people, please give the warmest of kinky welcomes to the one, THE ONLY, miiiiiiii-sssss Vicky Voluptuous”
The room went wild again, and the shimmering curtains parted. Bill hardly recognised the man he had seen in the alleyway, now wearing severe makeup and sporting a huge red wig that matched the red plastic raincoat that he was still wearing, but this time it was buttoned up and belted.
It turned out that Vicky fancied herself as a wannabe Lilly Savage comedian.
“Be back in a moment”, said Bill, and he hopped away.
Jay stood and watched for a while as Vicky delivered some very obvious, but funny enough jokes, to which Jay did not laugh as he was too angry about Todd stealing his PVC trench coat.
Bill was gone quite a while and so Jay decided to go and find him, eventually ending up near the entrance to the club, and found himself staring out of the glass doors into the dark street.
Misunderstanding his intention to leave, the girl from earlier who had taken his beloved shiny coat stood behind him, “don’t forget this”, she said, holding out the PVC garment as if she were presenting a precious gift to a visiting queen.
Jay was taken aback, not expecting hertz have it, “oh yes, thank you, lovely”, and he went to take it from her, but she held it up for him to slip on.
He slid an arm in, and then the other as the shiny black PVC enveloped him and he felt safe and happy. The girls hands lingered on his waist and Jay could see that she too had fallen under the spell of his mother’s 1980’s fashion statement - now his to cherish.
He was not getting out of that lovely slippery fabric until he was safe at home, even then he wasn’t sure he’d not sleep in it, just to be sure it was not stolen again.
Bill appeared next to him, “I’ve been looking for you, oh shit, we probably need to go”.
“Why? What’s happened?”
Bill held up his mac, identical to the one Jay was wearing, “I think I’ve done a bad thing”.
It took Jay a few seconds to work out what was going on, “So Todd wasn’t lying? It was his raincoat, just identical to mine”.
“Exactly, now let’s go”, snapped Bill, grabbing Jay’s arm to usher him out.
“We’ll just take it back, easy enough to explain, and I’ll apologise to Todd”, Jay replied, not moving.
“Well there’s the thing, that might be a problem. You see this PVC mac said it wants to be with me, and that Todd is not very nice to it, and it wants to go home with ME”.
Jay stared at Bill, “have you gone mad?”
Bill was slipping the soft PVC on, running his hands over the lovely smooth material, “well I’m leaving, and if Todd sees you in your trench coat with his missing he’ll assume you stole it, so you have to come with me.”
The men were two streets away from the club when they finally stopped walking. Jay laughed, “I guess Todd was nasty to me, even if he didn’t pinch my mac.”
“True, and you do look exceptionally handsome in it darling”, replied Bill.
“Well look at you too, if I look half as lovely in PVC as you do then no wonder everyone liked the mac”, Jay ran his hands over down Bill’s arm, “I’ve really enjoyed tonight, I’d quite like to meet with you again, if, you know, you’d like that.”
Bill leaned in to Jay and gave him a long lingering kiss, the two men slid their hands around each other’s PVC covered waists.
Jay’s father tapped the remote control and the TV flickered and went dark.
His mother stood up from the sofa and picked up the empty tea cups, “I do hope Jay has a good time out tonight and he might even find a nice boy to be friends with”.
The End

Thanks Bill. Stories take up a lot of time to write and it is important to hear that people liked them, otherwise you are left in the dark.

Great story would love to find a club where I could wear my pvc mac. Thought it was well written with well observed humour.
