As the title suggests. Please tell me about raincoats that you used to own, either as a child/teenager/adult that were thrown away.
After years of wondering I’ve reached the conclusion that this is one of the key reasons my interests in rainwear began. Does anyone else feel the same?
One that I particularly remember was an yellow PVC anorak and overtrousers combination that I found in a charity shop about 15 years ago, it was one of the best finds I have ever had, but in the end it wore out and I chucked it. It was a shame to see it go , but everything wears out in the end, I'm afraid. I wish I could find another set just the same.
Many years ago when I was breaking up with my then girlfriend. We rented a place together but as it was in both our names she had a key even though she moved out, and was still paying her half of the rent. I had a small collection of rainwear including a plastic jelly jacket which was nice, but the vinyl was a bit too stiff for my liking. A plastic raincoat which looked fab but had an annoying textured surface and a plastic rainsuit from millets which I adored because it was a bit small and tight. I came home one day to find she had been by to collect some things and my rainwear collection was gone. Thankfully I found all the items in a black bag in the trash. Luckily they were all easy to wipe clean and restore. I had intended to hide them but didn’t get round to it, and a few days later she returned when I was at work and the whole lot vanished, never to be seen again.
Way back in the late 60s i used to have a thick black rubberised mac but i wore it at all times and it fell in bits. In the 70s i bought a newsagents and my ex wife got me a ex army long rubber coat for me to do my paper rounds. I have has so many plastic/pvc pac a macs i could not count. When i go out now people do seem to give strange looks. I now have a pvc maid uniform i wear when home. (photo on request) .
In the 80's I was well into layering my rainwear, already with rainboots and headscarves, and a regular frequenter of charity shops to enlarge my collection. I happened upon two nylon raincoats with white rubber linings, and a hood with a transparent visor - very similar to Agu, but without the white stripes around the arms. One was a beige colour and the other light blue. They had double fastenings of a zip and buttons, and obviously the rubber lining made them completely waterproof. For several years they were my go-to second layer when preparing for an outing in heavy rain. Sadly, the rubber eventually start to perish, sticking to itself and tearing, so they had to go. I would love to find something similar, even though my current layers are totally waterproof!
One of my first pul pvc raincoat was there double breasted raincoat with cuff straps and shoulder lapels and a waist belt, i ordered it in the largest size they did so to have the maximum amount of pvc to wear oh and I ordered it in yellow, it was a great mac and I later added the souwester rain hood also in yellow, the whole outfit looked great and when I wore it out I definitely got a few looks and even a wolf whistle, unfortunately the mac had buttons and some of them eventually wore through the pvc and wouldn't do up so unfortunately I decided to through it away but now which I had kept it even to just wear if i couldn't do it up.
