this is the thing Ray. I can catch the bus from the end of my road, it drops me outside the shopping mall where most of the shops I want to use are. A coat of any type is actually too warm most of the year apart from waiting for the bus. The buses we have now have heating, the mall has heating, a raincoat is handy on a very wet day to get to the bus stop but it tends to go in my bag as soon as i get on the bus and isnt really needed thereafter

I had hoped the long periods of heavy rain might find real rainwear making a reappearence but cant say Ive seen any difference on the street

Even the few tourists Ive seen in the city have only been wearing thin ponchos

Yes - it's interesting that wellies (which not that long ago were only worn by farmers and country folks who needed the protection) made the transition from that to festival wear and then to mainstream high street fashion.

It seems that proper rainwear - ie non-disposable stuff, still needs to make that transition.
