Something that really made me smile

I went into Shoezone yesterday to buy some slippers. Whilst I was in there, a mother was trying on shoes, but her little boy had wandered off, further into the shop to the childrens wellingtons. When I saw him, he had pulled six pairs off the rack and sat surrounded by them, playing.

I could only look and smile......... now in my day, had I done that, they would all have been Dunlop rubber wellingtons all black one, not the 'glitzy, pvc ones we see today.

So was this scene, the seeds of a wellie loving future for the boy..........one can but hope.................But I doubt it.

As I said in my day, it was the feel, the rubbery smell and the look of the Dunlop wellies that were the turn.......especially the smell holding one up to your face and sucking in the rubbery smelling air......giving myself strange feelings I didn't quite understand back then.

Well the scene gave me a smile on a wet damp day........ now I've shared that smile with you.

Sadly I don't think this generation will ever have the same incredible pull to wellies as mine and earlier generations did. Anywhere which sold wellington boots in my day had that powerful aroma as soon as you went through the door and the nearer you got to them the more dizzying it got. For us that rubber smell was a huge part of how we got into wellies. This generation seems all about the bright colours and designs. It's great that they're still drawn towards wellington boots but I can't see it developing into the same powerful attraction we have. A pity
I completely agree with that, I have tried 'sniffing' the wellies of today....and unless they are by Gates ie. Hunters or similar rubber ones..........They have little or NO SMELL at all.
