Rubber mac care

Post by Bill_P »

Couple of questions about my rubberized cotton mac I bought last year.

1) What's the best way to get wrinkles out of a coat like this? I would assume you wouldn't want to iron it as that may ruin the rubber lining. Would my best bet be to just hang it in the shower and crank up the hot water, & try to smooth out the wrinkles while the steam soaks in? Or is there another tactic I should try?

2) This is the first rubber raincoat I've ever owned that wasn't brand new with that fresh new rubber smell. This coat kind of has a musty, mothball-y odor to it. Anyone know a good way to get rid of that odor, or at least camouflage it somewhat? I don't mind it but my wife absolutely hates the smell, and will not go out in public with me if I wear it.

the hot shower idea could work, it may also steam out some of the smell, got to be worth a try, if it was pvc I would say soak it properly to get the odour out, presumably this would be practical with the rubberised cotton as long as you hung it to dry naturally

Hi
Got no experience of that type of rainwear, but when ever I´ve come across a piece of rainwear at a junkshop (most of my gear is second hand, found some really great pieces for next to nothing...) that had a really strong smell (most of the time cigarette smell) what I´ve done is the following:
First I´ve soaked it, rinsing away any dirt and dust then... If the smell still is present, I fill a container that will hold the rainwear with a mixture of water (temperature doesn´t matter, as long as it doesn´t damage the rainwear anything goes) and some vinegar and let the rainwear soak in the vinegar/water mix for 24 hours. The ratio of water to vinegar is not rocket science (25-50 water to 1 vinegar will get you in the neighbourhood of what I have used with great results).
After the soak, a thorough rinse and a light but thorough (hand)wash with a detergent of your choice, more rinsing and finally, let it dry.
If the smell still is present, repeat the process. A good long airing of the rainwear after it has dried will help to get the smell out...
This process has worked wonders for me when I´ve tried to get the smell out of some old cotton backed PVC rainwear...
The smell that you want to get rid of might still be present when you wear the rainwear and it warms up, just repeat the process or more airing...
Another great tip that just might work is to lay the rainwear flat on the floor and then put ground coffee on the inside (lining, most of the time that´s where the smell is coming from...) and then let it sit for some time... Haven´t tried this but is it said to work on car interiors for getting rid of smells, so why not rainwear... How ever there´s a BIG CATCH with this process, under no circumstances should you allow the coffee to get moist or wet OR IT WILL STAIN LIKE HELL! (This is the "dry" process, rainwear must be dry!)

There´s my 2 cents
Hope that helps
