Steven at Weathervain found some very old red rubber sheeting hiding in the basement. As usual, he sent me a swab to look at. (And sniff at!) He knows I am always on the lookout for the traditional old (chlorine cured) red rubber. Margaret, the Weathervain expert seamstress, made up the apron for me. Boyhood rubber memories of my Nanny, and boarding school bed sheets and the Head Matron's red rubber apron. Also whippy crook handled canes. (In the dorm, slipping under the cotton bed undersheet with a stinging caned bottom to lie directly on the rubber. Pyjama bottoms removed for naughty early pubescent games. Absolutely! The red rubber sheets always smelt of urine, and as one sweated a powerful chemical cocktail would be released. An aphrodisiac that would have a profound effect on our sexuality.
