Do you mean capes for private fun or generally?

I had a discussion about wearing enclosed pvc capes (not ponchos in any form) in public here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=766

In case you don't know the website of PVC-U-Like, you should look it up and browse the images of capes in the shop, there is a gallery too. These images are outstanding!

One question: Did you ever succeed to sleep in a cape? I didn't, because with every move, the cape reminds me of its presence and this keeps me awake, no matter, how tired I am.

Have not tried to sleep with a cape, but have many times with a clear plastic rain suit. Cold nights it really warms you up and if you are tired you crash but wake up with a wonderful sensation of being encased and slippery. I have several suits that have been made fo the motocross industry that work well and hold up well.

I have a yellow pvc cape which i wore only yesterday. It has been raining steadily over the past 24 hours and so I had to perfect opportunity to put it on.
I wore it walking the beach and in the local park. I went into my local newspaper shop and the girls thought I looked lovely. Whilst they didn't say anything directly to me I know they liked it 'cos of the smiling, approving looks they gave me. And it made a lovely slocky sound too.
I wore my navy hunters too which completed the lovely ensemble.

I still wonder, what these smiles really stand for, but I am not going to ask complete strangers because I don't expect honest replies. It is hard enough to get honest opinions from close friends or family. I got similar smiles a couple of times, in different places, for wearing a similar cape and, another time, for wearing a rain skirt that I am using when I ride bicycle in heavy rain. It seems, that to most people, such garments are pleasantly surprising and make them friendly towards the wearer. Good enough for me, apparently, we are not scaring or discomforting people, instead, we bring some joy to them Still, I am curious...

I can do some research these days, we have constant rain.

I wear a long PVC raincape only if it rains.
Not as the streets are dry
My experience is , that people don't look at you , I think because they see someone wearing clothing that match the weather at that moment .
For practical reasons I wear rubber boots ,who are high enough so that water from the cape does not run into my boots.(Aigle ).
If there is much wind I don't wear a cape but a PVC raincoat ,combined with raintrousers.
Some years ago I was in a German hotel, where I had put on a raincape because it rained.
When I went out I met a lady who said : ''That's very good ,that you wear that....''
So I think more peole would wear it ,but for some reason they don't.

still find that a raincoat is more practical to wear generally than a cape as it means the hands are free when shopping or stuff. I would have thought in most circumstances a cape was very impractical. Or am I wrong here?

No ,You are not wrong.
But if I am shopping it could be better that I wear the goods (Only if they are small ) under the cape.
Otherwise a raincoat would be better.
And I wear the cape mostly as I am walking and not shopping .

I thought about the hand issue with capes. Yes, it is an issue, but it is not as bad as it seems at first. You only need practise. Wear a cape at home for a while and do stuff, it helps. One hint: When you need both hands, keep them apart while getting them out of the cape and keep some fabric floating between your arms. Otherwise you are quite restricted and it also looks quite silly - my opinion.
