I'm an old man but as a teen boy was made to wear rain bonnets as my mum thought them neater than souwesters. From age 15 to 18 she tied a rainbonnet on me whenever I went out in my pacamac, which hadn't a hood of its own. In old age I have the opportunity to wear them again with my rainwear. Should I go for it?

Definitely! we older gentlemen need to stay warm and dry -but above all smart. The way to go ....

I recently bought a gents Elements rainwear mack. choosing the largest size to get the ankle length that I like. It has a detachable hood that is secured by press studs but when removed, doubles as a rain bonnet which can be worn separately if wanted in combination with other raincoats. Worn either way its equally fun to wear. I find them neater than the souwesters I wore before them though I like wearing those too.

Mmm I just love a detachable hood. As I can play with it with out the mackintosh.

I agree with you the ability to have the hood separate has advanages. In my teens my mum had always bought me a separate rain bonnet. I was not allowed to buy or choose my own clothes but taken to a girls outfitters (as rain bonnets were exclusively sold as female items of wear), and made to try on several until she was satisfied. As they were bought to match my regulation grey school gabardine raincoat I was spared the more girly colours but still teased by other boys for wearing what was clearly a girl's rainwear item, though in truth I enjoyed wearing it and would take it to bed at night to wear as a nightcap.

Yes I would always do the same thing with my sisters mackintosh hood.
