Disheartening work conversation

I was at work two weeks ago and a conversation on rain gear came up. It was raining heavily that night and I had my camouflage AJ Group PVC rain jacket on to run out and grab coffee for everyone.

They asked if it was raining and I showed them the surface of my Jacket. They said something along the lines of "I don't think I know anyone who actually own a rain coat." They asked if I hunted (I usually wear a camo hunting winter jacket when it's cold). I said yes that I hunt and fish, that I have a large collection of rain gear.

Just a bit of a shame that nobody even sees the practicality of a rain coat. For reference I'm in my 20-30 and live in the north east U.S., I work primarily female coworkers. Or maybe it has something to do with people don't do as many outdoor activities with the rise of digital entertainment.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can be entirely unprepared for wet weather, even though it’s much of life in the UK. It does make the rare sightings of shiny rainwear a bonus, but I do agree that we seem to be very much in the minority, and it wouldn’t surprise me if members here are not also good at being prepared for other situations.

Looking at this from the U.K., plenty of people seem to wear the Gore-Tex stuff(which does not appeal to me at all) but it does seem strange that others are totally unprepared for rain even when it is very likely. 45 years ago I left school, in the first job I had my colleagues were all women apart from my boss, out of 5 of those women all but one wore some kind of shiny rainwear, wether nylon cagoules or PVC.

I suppose alot of it is down to lifestyle. With most people owning cars it's a dash to the car direct to where people are going. The shopping mall is undercover. There is less need to be outside on a wet day. An umbrella generally suffices for the quick dash from car to door.
