A Cottage Mystery - Part 2

Post by Domino »

"I need to make a note of your name and address, Miss"
"Yes, of course. I'm Samantha Vernon. I live at 43, Queen's Avenue, Delhurst. That's in Surrey."
"So what brought you here?" Kendal asked.
"I had a letter from some local solicitors, Courtney and Co.,
telling me that my uncle, Jack Hogben, had died, and he had apparently left me his cottage in his will. That surprised me as I'd never actually met Uncle Jack. He was my late mother's brother, but there was never much contact, even with her. Anyway, I thought I'd drive down this weekend and have a look at the place.
I collected the keys from Courtney's yesterday and arrived there yesterday evening. It's very near the sea, a really out of the way place, no other building in sight."
"It sounds like it's probably an old coastguard's cottage. They often built them in secluded spots. Most of them have been sold off. Quite cheaply, I believe."
"Well, the place wasn't at all tidy. Piles of books and papers strewn everywhere. Uncle Jack obviously wasn't a very organised person. I made myself some tea and ate the sandwiches I'd brought with me. I looked out of the window. At first, the only thing I could see, was the moon and its reflection on the water. Then, all of a sudden, I noticed a man walking along the beach. He was wearing one of those long, yellow coats that fishermen wear."
"You mean an oilskin?"
"Yes, that's it," Samantha confirmed. "Well, I thought it might be someone who had known Uncle Jack, so I opened the front door and went outside to speak to him, but when I did so, he wasn't there. Yet there was no way that he could have got out of view in such a short space of time. The whole beach is entirely open."
"Certainly sounds a bit odd," said Kendal.
"Anyway, I went back inside and started sorting through Uncle's papers. Nothing very important. There were quite a few notebooks, but I didn't bother reading them. Suddenly, I noticed that the room had grown very cold. I mean, really cold. I got a blanket and wrapped it around me. Then I heard this noise. A bit like someone groaning. I searched the cottage, but there was definitely no-one else there."
"Do you think it might possibly have been the wind? It can play funny tricks here on the coast, especially in the more secluded parts."
"That's what I told myself - until this morning."
