Laughter in the Rain

Post by Domino »

Referring to the discussion about Carol Kirkwood started by Wealdenmac, although she certainly favours the shortish trenchmacs in pastel colours, she has from time to time worn other styles in her many BBC weather broadcasts. Consider these:

Carol AD.jpg
These two are plastic and hooded. Two of a kind.

This red one is a nice thick material.

I've been an admirer of hers for years. I'm sure the macs helped. She would look great in either shiny black or see-through plastic., but I wouldn't hold your breath!

Well Domino. we never know our luck...It's always possible we might see Carol wearing a shiny/see through mac one day, but you're right we shouldn't hold our breath..It did get me thinking though, do we ever see tv presenters/reporters wearing shiny pvc raincoats?..
I can't say any spring to my mind..

Lucy Kite on Central news often wears a shiny mac when doing the weather if it is raining! She looks hot I can tell you!

Not very often, to say the least of it. I do recall once on GMTV, Kate Garraway was sent to do a piece from China. She didn't take any rainwear and, as it was teeming as she arrived, had to borrow a see-through plastic cape. As I recall, the wind was enough to ensure that it didn't really keep her very dry.
I've already looked in vain for Lucy in a shiny mac on You-tube, but the only one I can find is this padded coat.

Well, the third one might be OK but I 'hate' the earlier ones.

Now I don't live in the UK but, even as it rained, there seemed to be very few longer coats.

There must be a long-established fetish of getting knees wet.

And why do so many male Brits have this shorn-headed look. Can't be all a claim to belonging to an semi-occult English club.

I also recall that from 1972-1986, the BBC had a dire interview programme called 'Pebble Mill at One' to fill the lunchtime slot. One of the long-running presenters was Marian Foster. Occasionally, she would have to go outside to conduct the interview, and if it was raining she would wear a raincoat of this type:

She would usually wear the hood up (which was unusual for a presenter in itself). She had a dark blue one and a green one.
[All the many presenters who passed through this programme over the years conducted a sort of 'formula interview', so no matter who was doing the interviewing or who was being interviewed, they all sounded the same. It was actually resurrected from 1991-1996, but was no better.]

Pausing only briefly from my continuing contemplation of Carol Kirkwood, I do recall that, while she was the BBC's West of England Correspondent, Jane O'Brien occasionally appeared in a shiny black pvc/nylon mix short coat of a kind widely available in the shops at the time. But then, as any fule kno, it does rain a lot down that way.
