I have loved wearing plastic and PVC rainwear for a long time, but back in the mid 60s, I also liked to wear my navy blue gaberdine school raincoat. Sometimes I wore my plastic pakamac too, but underneath my gaberdine for some reason. The girls section was next door, and I liked to see them walking up the road wearing their gaberdines. I would be around 10 to early teens back then.
Just wondered if others enjoyed wearing a gaberdine back then?
School Gaberdine
Re: School Gaberdine
I was in Comprehensive School from 79 to 84 and for some reason, during the summer before my 1st term, my mother decided that I should wear a school gaberdine and pakamac, when we went to the local outfitters to buy my uniform for the year ahead.
Although it wasn't stipulated in the uniform list, neither did they contravene the list either. As long as coats were navy blue you were safe.
I made a pleading case for a simple anorak or zip up cagoule but she was having mone of it. I was made to try on a variety of different sizes until she settled on an unisex one with a hood that was calf length, and had what she called "room for growth".
I always had to wear it buttoned to the neck, and if heavy rain was forecast I also had to wear the pakamac over it too.
It was horrendously embarrassing at the time, but looking back now....
