Although it looks a little like Upnor, the location is definitely Rye, Sussex. The "castle" is in fact the Ypres Tower, pronounced "Wipers Tower". As far as I can see, the rest of the outdoor scenes were also filmed in Rye, a town I am pleased to know intimately. The town of Tilling was based on Rye (and one of the rivers going through the town is the Tillingham).
Personally I prefer the version of the series with Miranda Richardson & Anna Chancellor, also (outdoor scenes) filmed exclusively in Rye.

Wouldn't have been so easy to get hold of in 1985 either as the macs look like vintage ones.

I've looked at the later 2014 versions of the series - surprised to find that only 3 episodes were made with no PVC/rubber macs to be seen sadly.
