I had similar odour for a while from a couple of vinyl items I bought from Asos. It does smell a bit "oily", but it does go away once worn a few times. To be hounest, I actually quite liked the smell! But then I like the smell of freshly laid tarmac and steam engines!!!!

That's an indication that plasticizer has exuded onto the surface. This normally no longer happens with plasticized pvc. I had it happen with some polyurethane raincoats several years ago.

Like all products. Change happens over time. EU regulations to cut harmful chemicals, changes what is being produced. Farmerrain used to have a pvc based material. But sadly no more. Just like SBR macs fading fast.
As to the smell, just hang up the mac for a day or two and it will be fine.

it is not so much of the smell that concerns me although it has that hydrocarbon style odor. i was informed the residue is harmless however.
