in terms of its shape, material, and features what do you see as the perfect raincoat?

For me.....
It must be soft semi-see-through/translucent plastic; definitely NOT thin polythene or even EVA.
It must be really soft plastic not stiff or crinkly.
Preferably pale pink or other pastel colours or natural. Definitely not glass clear.
It must have a hood, probably detachable.
Elasticated wrists or wrist straps.
A matching belt.
Ankle length.
Voluminous.
Internal pockets with slits so that you can get your hands inside the mac.
A yolk on the back would be nice.

That would be my perfect raincoat but I also like capes and ponchos in the same material.

here is my ideal design: has the combinations of the items international and farmerrain retrocoat 2.0 design however it has inner elasticated sleeves, a rear storm flap cape that is not vented and has a thick soft reversible pvc that is semi shiny on both sides. it could also have a zipper followed by a zipper cover with popper buttons on the end while the neck cover has a popper button on the side like the helly hansens.

For me it's either a mix of the Farmerrain Retro with the hood shape of the legendary 70s Rukkas...

Or as another idea the Stutterheim Stockholm long opal but with additional flaps covering the pocket entry, preventing water running into the pockets if you have your hands outside the pockets. There is one known Stutterheim version feat. such flaps - my black Stockholm opal as their second opal edition inventing the thinner less stiff fabric aka "mid-weight" in opal for the first time (the first opal editions were very stiff). But unfortunately it's not the long version, only the regular one.

Same style for a cape - stud fastening and with neck popper. If you look for such a new cape and are tall enough for XL or XXL size I can recommend the "Boerdal" cape sold by German store mistwetter.de (Mistwetter = foul weather). That cape in a shiny fabric like the old Rukka one would be the ultimate raincape! It has matte fabric with a feel similar to the matte mid-weight Stutterheim pvc coated cotton. Please note here that the currently sold capes have the male-typical right buttoning scheme (I have one in navy blue), the pic shows the female buttoning of the early versions. If you want one ask Clemens the shop owner for that if needed.

As a further interesting coat I like the classic British SBR macs with hood and the ladies' Klepper coat with detachable hood. It's the old shape you can't get anymore in temporary fashion. The round shape of the rillo ventilation system looks imho better/more beautiful than the straigt line of the gents coat version. The biggest fail of the gents Kleppers is the missing of a proper detachable hood like the ladies coats feature. In the high era of the Kleppers men usually all wore hats - no matter if they got soaked quickly... (honestly I have to add that I've heard of a Klepper hat with the waterproof fabric, but I'm not sure if such a hat was offered these days)



The look of the hood lying on the shoulders looks so great!

It's the "Tourenmantel" coat by Klepper (it's long out ouf production). It is wider than the classic "Rillo" coat and made esp. for people with a small backpack.

Quater zip over the head cagoule, must have elasticated wrists but not too wide or too thin, white zip, red or blue fabric, maut be shiny on the inside coating and had a front pocket under a chest flap, white draw cords on hood and hem. Hood needs to be a good size and hang nicely not a hidden in zip collar type.

Same here. I agree with you. Anything nylon full zip or half zip. Hate hoods in the collar. So so wrong. Useless.

Also the cagoules with the 3inch stripes on the sleeves.
