Men were, apparently, not similarly treated.

I agree with WealdenMac about the high, heady odour of rubber mackintoshes in the 1950s. Unfortunately this was not appreciated by women merely seeking to buy a stylish, waterproof raincoat (as opposed to men whose appreciation was more diverse) In response, makers reduced the distinctive rubbery aroma. In regard to rubberised satin raincoats of that era, I'm firmly of the view that the rubber backing was thicker than those that came later & as a consequence the buckle, crinkle & swish was more pronounced & therefore more erotic. You can almost "hear" this in the stills of Dors in her mack.

Regarding my comments above, I wrote an account of an episode I had with a superb emerald green rubberised satin mack back in the 1960s which appears in the stories section & is dated 3rd October 2021. It is entirely factual, but perhaps a little explicit for some tastes. It's entitled "Rubber Slut".
