I would like to return to the late 70s / early 80's when there were lots of government surplus shops in the UK that not only sold military wear but commercially produced rainwear and macks. I would love to buy a brand new Naval heavy PVC oilskin set with the big thick Plastic Souwesters and matching high overtrouser set with the long glossy double breasted Mackintosh to wear over it weighing the wearer down with the weight of all that heavy cotton backed strong plastic smelling PVC, but being able to wear it around town and the beach without any odd glances or remarks except for comments on how heavy the rain was coming down !
It would also have been a good time to get originally squeaky shiny Rukka heavy PVC Raincoats too.

Without doubt I would go back to the mid 1960s when I was growing up. I had a black see through pakamac that I loved wearing.I had no worries then about wearing pvc/plastic in the rain in public. That raincoat started my interest in rainwear. A little later in the '60s I had a green school gaberdine, then a navy blue one.I loved those too. At the time I used to arrive at school early, wearing my gaberdine of course,to watch the girls coming to school in their navy blue hooded gaberdines.I thought they were gorgeous! Happy days! I wore my gab.fully fastened up to the top button at the neck and the belt tightly fastened, just as is should be, and just as the girls did. Happy days! :D

Well PolyVinylC, your mission is that next time it rains you walk to the local shop in the rain wearing a dark pvc raiincoat over your clothes to keep you dry. Try it and see how little reaction there is

I remember my mother buying me and my two sisters those lovely pvc yellow raincoats Penneys (ireland) Primark (UK).
I always wore mine yellow side out with the navy canvas side on the inner.
Oh they were so nice and comfy and soft to wear. I loved them.
Please bring them back!!
Where can I get one nowadays in Ireland?
Great minds think alike. Remember when every second person on the streets had either a reversible raincoat or a clear plastic mac, in the late 70s or early 80s? Some lovely reversible pictures on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/39588164@N08/5594511287/ if you're friends with the owner.

I like nylon raincoat from the 60s and 70s. They were blue. They unfortunately can not be purchased anymore. :( They were known probably made in Italy. I wish I had some piece of them. ;)

This is a good question! there are lots of different kinds of rainwear I'd love to be able to buy off the shelf in shops, firstly it would be a trip back to the 1950-60's for a set of the original UK made (OK, Scottish!) heavy duty shiny smooth yellow PVC fisherman's oilskins, the cheap, textured Chinese stuff available today just isn't anywhere near as good, the we're off to the traditional UK department stores of the 1970's, where there are racks of different coloured tranparent thick smooth PVC macs just begging to be bought! Finally, a quick stop off in the 1980's here I would hunt high and low to find one of those brilliant reversible rainsuits, the ones with the shiny, slightly textured blue PVC outside and the totally smooth, very soft and shiny yellow PVC inside, I had one of these suits in the 90's and I virtually lived in it, I nearly cried when it tore and was beyond repair :(, I've seen the jackets occasionally on ebay but never the 2 peice suit.

Mmms - those reversibles were great. You can still get the jackets from Jeantex I think. I don't think I've ever seen reversible rainpants - sounds like a great idea though!

I would like to go back to the years 1975 / 1980, I was then 13 /18 years old, I was in love with the flexible translucent pvc raincoats La Redoute, 3 Suisses, Quelle...
If I had been able to at the time, I would have made a full collection of them!
