Vintage rainwear

Post by plasphil »

This man has some fantastic old rainwear adverts from catalogues, a 'classic' time for rainwear sadly long gone.

Danish rather than German, Paul. So the currency would have been Kroner.
Thanks for sharing them, Phil. In the UK plastic macs were most in evidence from 1947-1953. Indeed, there were a lot to be seen amongst the 1953 coronation crowds, but still a lot of ladies' gabardine raincoats (some with fitted hoods, some detachable, some without hoods). Plastic macs were still around in the early 60's, but most had matching headscarves rather than hoods by then. I remember a work colleague in 1960 had one with a crinkled texture, but she also had a kingfisher blue gabardine raincoat (no hood), which she wore in really wet weather.

Yes, I can confirm that in the early sixties the hood was replaced by either a scarf or a pixie hood. I remember when I bought my first plastic mac, pink translucent with a contrasting trim at pockets, that there was a loose belt and a shaped scarf. The scarf tied under (or more fashionably on!) the chin, and it was shaped so that it covered the back of the neck through to forehead. The length was just above the knee if I recall correctly.

I also remember buying a white translucent rain suit, jacket and skirt in around 1961. By about 1963/64, the fashionable plastic mac was the primary coloured slim style. I bought a shiny yellow front zipping mini mac from a magazine special offer; it would have looked perfect on Twiggy at that time.

The mid-late sixties were a wonderful time especially in London with C&A’s always stocking up to the minute trendy plastic macs. I bought one in black and white, and a delight in clear plastic with white trim on collar, cuffs, pocket, and hems.

There seemed to be a bad period then with only those hideous crinkle pvc macs around until I think it was 1986 when the ‘jelly jackets’ and the long translucent macs with drawstring hoods invaded the shops.

Oh, but I must sound so old!

Oh yes, and also those plastic overshoes! Bizarre to see that they were advertised worn by women wearing stilettos! They never really seemed to have caught on in the UK. They were gone by the mid sixties except in some old fashioned department stores - certainly not worn by the trendy

What a gem! Women looking elegant and sensibly dressed for wet weather in contrast to so much of what we see nowadays.

Loved the galoshes and one or two tie on rainhoods as well all the other hoods.

Great find Phil. Thanks for posting.
I love vintage rainwear.
I'm glad to find others liking galoshes. I have always liked them since I found a pair when growing up. I thanks they were my Grans. I bought a pair on ebay which I can just about get on (without shoes as these are about a size 8 & I'm a 10). I agree you saw them being worn in the US rather then here.
Nice one

Especially the nylon raincoats from that period I love. Sad you can not get them anymore. It was a nice feeling to have such a nylon coat on, and not least the sound when you move.
I wish I had some piece of them. :)
