Rainwear Retailers

We bemoan the fact that few people wear proper rainwear these days however one of the reasons may be that they do not know where to purchase a proper raincoat.

During the recent wet months it seems very rare that we have seen the traditional rainwear suppliers advertising in the national press, or being featured in an article, yet I have been asked a few times as to where people can purchase a similar PVC raincoat to the one I or my wife was wearing.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how we can persuade the retailers to do more to encourage people to buy their products?

Advertising cost?
Maybe we should get some photos of proper ladies wearing their macs out and about in towns and cities?
That may do the trick?

These things must sell. Think back to the red h&m raincoats which were quite reasonably priced a couple of years back now, they seemed to fly off the rails although you rarely actually see anyone wearing them out. Begs the question did they only get bought for indoor 'activity'? who knows. Yet h&m did nothing to stock such items in subsequent years. Why? Primark seemed to sell out of those pvc macs. Again you rarely see anyone wearing one. The whole thing is rather baffling.

Totally agree. The department store Beatties used to sell some really nice Nadtex brand mac in either a translucent white or ones with polka dots. I had already bought some & they then had some sales before unfortunately closing down. It was always busy & after a while there were not many left (there was quite a stock to start with). Yet I have only ever seen two ladies wearing them since. Are there more closet mac fetishists than we think?

I seem to recall an two page spread in one of the tabloids a couple of years ago...the heading ..."The Mac is back"

Some young ladies modelling different macs being sold in High Street stores.....several reasonably priced

Must admit there were some nice looking macs..lightweight but not the kind of mac many of us mac enthusiasts prefer..(Plastic/PVC/nylon)...more the polyester cotton type which years ago would have sold without the cost of advertising in the tabloids

A young lady would window shop...see a mac she liked...go in ...try it on....probably buy it!

As regards "The mac is back" I can safely say I never saw one young lady in one of those "advertised" macs

I think we have got to admit the "closet mac wearers" outnumber those who openly wear them in public

Me......wear my macs outdoors whenever I can...rain or shine.....and indoors for the more feminine ones

I'm afraid that 'The Mac is Back' is something of a newspaper cliche. I even remember it being used by Lorraine Kelly on GMTV several years ago. It has been used a lot over the last couple of decades - but never seems to result in any significant resurgence of rainwear wearing.

Even with all the rain we're having I've yet to anyone else wearing 'proper' rainwear when I'm out with the dog!

Perhaps a few women did buy some of the Top shop or primark macs but got them home and they were never worn because they were'nt considered popular.
Unfortunately unless someone famous has been photographed wearing one or it appears in some sort of fashion magazine shows them, I bet they are purchased and forgotten about.

The only time you see new Plastic raincoats is when they are made in small numbers by too expensive retailers - Burberry etc.
If only people did'nt take themselves so seriously and wore clothes to suit the weather at the time for sensibility not fashion.

Thinking back to years ago were most macs considered to be worn because they were trendy/fashionable

NO!

Most were worn as a sensible item to be worn for protection from the elements and the thicker ones for comfort

My sister...back in the 1960"s bought trendy macs(plastic/PVC) but even then the large percentage wore them as sensible outerwear irrespective if trendy or not

As the years progressed ..into the 1980s although the older generations...perhaps those brought up in an era (1950s-1970s)when parents educated their kids to dress sensibly ...to wear a mac ...they continued to wear a mac

But then they started appearing in mail order catalogues under fashionwear and High Street retailers started using this label to sell macs and yes they sold them but they were soon discarded if a new item became fashionable

Into the wardrobe.....and like many(particularly ladies) would have a clean out of their items...they see a mac they bought..."Oh I haven"t worn that"...so out that goes

My ex...not a mac lady but she like many ladies had a mad moment clearing out surplus items from an over loaded wardrobe...generally to the local Jumble Sale as no computers and the likes of ebay then

But the decline in mac wearing is now apparent as even the older generations have become fashion conscious.....a mac is not trendy....they don"t want to be seen in a mac because it is not fashionable

All the advertising..."THe Mac is back" used many times in the Tabloids just does not change peeope"s attitude to the wearing of a mac

Me...I am not in the least bothered if a mac is trendy or not...I wear my macs if it is raining or not

This morning the sun is out....(Quite a rarity)...... I have to travel up to Central London ...my outerwear will be my blue nylon mac..if I get too warm I may take it off

It is going to take a miracle to change people"s attitudes to dressing sensibly...the preference seems to be...to wear as little as possible with the main aim...to get wet

It will be interesting to see how many macs are being worn in Central London compared with my home town in Croydon

Croydon like so many places..."anti-mac"
